Tesco “technical glitch” leaves customers confused and frustrated
At the weekend I broke a story about Tesco, working with Adele Cooke at the Sun for the article Tesco shoppers fuming over yellow sticker receipt glitch which leaves them baffled at checkouts
Tesco has cause widespread bewilderment for its money savvy customers.
Emma Bradley is a Gloucester money blogger and coach and so knows a thing or two about money saving. This
week, as usual, she looked for bargains and bought a variety of yellow sticker items in her local Tesco.
But when she went to check the receipt as she normally does, she was frustrated to find that the receipt only showed the original prices of the items and not the individual savings.
Emma bought multiple ‘special offers’. Her bargain haul of yellow sticker items consisted of:
6 shower gels originally £1.50 which were marked up at 38p,
2 Lynx Jungle Fresh 72h Antiperspirant Deodorants for Men which were yellow stickered at £1.03 down from £4.00 each and
2 x hair oil originally priced at £13.00 each and yellow stickered at £3.25 each.
The receipt only showed the original prices. The discount is shown in a combined total ‘savings’ and said that she had saved £38.76. But because the individual savings don’t show on the receipt, Emma says that she doesn’t actually know if she has been charged the yellow sticker prices, so can’t check.

The receipt says she saved £38.76 but after half an hour of trying to work it out, Emma says “By my calculations I actually saved £31.24 but the receipt says I saved £38.75. It seems to be a random figure that doesn’t relate to anything.”
There has been a problem with the receipts for a week. Emma says when she tried to get some clarity from the customer service assistant, they told her that it had been a nightmare, as they must have had 300 queries / complaints already this week.
In Hartlepool, author F.E. Birch bought some discounted fruit and vegetables. “I get my total savings to £7.72 but the receipt says £8.73”

Despite Emma or Effie not being able to make the figures add up, Tesco says that customers are being charged the correct “reduced to clear” prices, claiming that only the itemisation of the discount on the receipt is affected.
A spokesperson for Tesco said:
We want our receipts to be clear and simple for our customers. We are aware of a technical issue where some receipts issued in our stores are not showing itemised discounts on ‘reduced to clear’ offers. However, the savings are totalled and shown under ‘special offer’ at the foot of the receipt. We apologise for the inconvenience and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
