It goes without saying that Christmas is an expensive time! But as a consumer expert I’m here to help you save money on all areas of Christmas spending and saving. Today I’m looking at how to save money on cards.

- If you have a tradition of buying Christmas cards for everyone in the office, suggest all staff putting in half of what they would normally spend on cards and buy a couple of the biggest cards you can find. Everyone can put their message to everyone on there and donate the remaining money to charity.
- You can also design and print pictures and find a suitable frame yourself. Use sites like Canva (https://www.canva.com/) to design your own, using free stock images. Sometimes you can get a free premium month to do even more!
- Email your own pictures as cards instead of posting, completely free. Or you can download a free picture from Canva or upload your own and edit. Or record yourself reading a story and personalise it including names of the recipients, upload to a platform, like Youtube, set to private and email the link.

- Plantable cards are a thoughtful two-in-one gift, as they can be planted after Christmas to grow flowers or herbs, reducing waste and spreading joy well beyond the festive season. You can make them yourself by recycling old paper scraps (like envelopes, newspaper or egg cartons). First, soak and blend the paper into a pulp, then gently stir in small seeds, such as wildflowers, basil or lettuce. Spread the mixture thinly onto a mesh screen or sieve, press out the excess water and leave it to dry completely before trimming into card shapes. You can then decorate and write on them as you would a normal card, and include a short message explaining how to plant the card: simply tear it up, cover lightly with soil, water and watch it grow…!
- Design and make your own jigsaw to match a recipient’s interests and hobbies. Or take favourite pictures and stick them to card and cut into pieces! Put in an envelope and let the recipient make their own card!
- Children can draw a picture of themselves and make the frame by sticking dried pasta to the card or paper and painting it. Good old potato prints work too! And it’s even more fun if you do it as an adult particularly if you are not artistic! The recipient will enjoy it more than a bought card!
- Write a personalised letter. Write a heartfelt, handwritten letters or cards to your loved ones. A well-thought-out message can be more meaningful than a packet card.
- Tell people that this year you are not sending cards but donating to charity instead. This helps the environment, saves you money and funds a charity.
- Keep old Christmas cards for the following year to make them into photo frame Christmas cards or advent calendars.
- Buy your cards and wrapping as soon as you can after Christmas. It is an obvious one but sometimes people need reminding! Or look Christmas Eve, too, when some retailers will start to reduce them before they go out of stock because lots of people will also be stocking up for next year.
