1) Get free stuff! Use sites such as FreeStuffUKand LatestDeals.co.uk for no-cost and low-cost items. Enter competitions, sign up to test products or do surveys to get free goodies from a wide range of retailers.

2) Use cashback sites and apps. JamDoughnut offers prepayment gift cards to use online, in-store or on the phone, and earn reward points. Take out cash after you have received £10 worth in points.

There are others but these are the main ones. Create an account and look up the company you wish to buy from. This could be anything from a retailer to an energy provider or broadband provider. Click through on the site to register and track your purchase. The time in which you get the cashback amount varies from trader to trader.

Often you will get a high discount for your first delivery using one of the discount sites.

4) Sign up for free and use whichever one gives the biggest cashback. Download Honey, which searches for active discount codes on Internet sites you visit.

5) Use price comparison sites such as trolley.co.uk which will also give you the prices using loyalty apps/cards etc.

6) Meal plan and use a list to reduce waste and “bargain” temptations.

8) Shopmium, Green Jinnand CheckoutSmart are designed to give you money off various household and food items. Download the app, register and choose the item with the discount, upload the receipt and photo of the barcode and the money will go into your account. Time it right and you can get a gift when you start.

9) OLIO connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses so that surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. The Too Good To Go app allows you to purchase and collect food from businesses at a reduced price.

10) Buy non-perishables in bulk when on offer

11) Look online to see if non perishables can bought cheaper from a store that isn’t a supermarket. Camel Camel Camel monitors the prices of items for sale on Amazon and lets you know when prices are dropping, together with the price history. Check whether those bargains are really what they claim to be!

Pricechecker, Pricerunner,  PriceSpy and Idealo all compare prices from different sites for the same item, so it may also be worth checking them before purchasing anything.

12) Try out Boxsaver. It buys in bulk from the suppliers and passes on the saving to customers. It compares, and guarantees to beat prices across eight other supermarkets: Aldi, Asda, B&M, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. It says you can save even more if you buy a recipe bundle, multibuy or value box. Free delivery over £25 anywhere in the UK. Helen15 will give you 15% discount.

13) Join in with friends and neighbours on any bulk buys.

14) See 10 Tips for saving money on food for more ways to save in the supermarket.

15) See Supermarkets’ “Most annoying” habits revealed so that you don’t fall foul of ways supermarkets get us to spend more.

16) Use Trolley.co.uk  to compare prices across the supermarkets including loyalty schemes.

17) Free My Meal puts people who want to cook meals in touch with people who need a hot meal. Can be done anonymously, safeguarding measures in place but not means tested or anything like that.
